WESTBURY - The new year is bringing some unwelcome changes for Nassau businesses.
A new $500 licensing fee takes effect Jan. 1 in Nassau County. The fee, approved by county legislators, affects businessmen like carpet installers, gutter cleaners, and dealers who buy and sell gold.
The fee will be imposed every two years and is expected to bring in $1.7 million in revenue for Nassau County.
Supporters say licensing these businesses will also allow the county to keep tabs on them, preventing consumer fraud. But business owners say it will make it more difficult to stay in business.
