New veterans' clinic opens in East Meadow

EAST MEADOW - More than a decade in the making, a new state-of-the-art medical clinic for veterans opened its doors in East Meadow today.

The 11,000-square foot facility is located at Nassau University Medical Center and features 14 treatment rooms. A staff of doctors and nurses are on hand to help with veterans' primary care and mental health. The center will also provide access to specialists.

For now, the East Meadow clinic is open five days a week, but officials want to add a sixth day and possibly evening office hours.

Korean War veteran Salvatore Pellegrino says he'll be using the new clinic regularly, but he hopes younger veterans won't hesitate to get help either.

The Department of Veterans' Affairs is planning on building another similar clinic in Valley Stream by the end of the year.
