SHIRLEY - Beachgoers visiting Smith Point Beach in Shirley and Cupsogue Beach in Westhampton between 5 and 8 p.m. will now be charged a 'twilight fee' of $4 per car.

The fee went into effect last weekend and has received mixed reviews from the public. Especially since Smith Point Beach is home to the TWA Flight 800 memorial.

Suffolk County Parks Commissioner Greg Dawson claims the new 'twilight fee' is necessary to cover operating costs and plug the $530-million state budget deficit.
