WOODBURY - A new push is being made to help thousands of patients on waiting lists for organ donations.

The White House, medical centers and social media sites are teaming up to shorten the time patients have to wait, in addition to encouraging more people to sign up to be donors.

Facebook, Twitter and Google have agreed to start an online campaign to promote organ donations.

Patients say waiting on a list is a challenge that affects every part of their life.

"Waiting the past nine years - it's a battle," says Noel Eloriaga, of Port Jefferson. "Just to be able to get up on certain days, do dialysis...come home basically bedridden because you can't function properly."

The Department of Defense is working to create an institute that will research ways to create replacement organs, which would ideally cut down on the number of patients on waiting lists.
