PATCHOGUE - Patchogue business owners say an extreme makeover of a downtown district is creating a big and unanticipated problem. The revitalized Village of Patchogue has new restaurants, stores and shoppers, but few parking spaces. On busy weekends, there could be as many as 3,000 cars in the village, but there are only 1,800 parking spaces.Dennis Smith, of the Business Improvement District, and Blums Swimwear store owner Abie Siegel put together a comprehensive parking study. In it, they recommend creating more surface or tier parking, installing timed parking meters and adding signs to designated parking areas. Mayor Paul Pontieri says he likes the solutions they offer in their report.Meanwhile, other store owners and shoppers say they don't like the idea of metered parking in Patchogue.
