Police say 44-year-old James Ryan was riding his motorcycle on the Wantagh State Parkway when he hit and killed 19-year-old Matthew Scarpati in 2009. Scarpati had been changing a tire on the Jones Beach bike path.

Ryan suffered traumatic brain injury in the crash and at various points throughout his court appearance said that he didn't understand what was going on.

Ryan faced several charges, including DWI and second-degree vehicular manslaughter. He will be sentenced Oct. 19.
