MINEOLA - A New Hyde Park man was sentenced today to three to nine years in prison for killing a teen bicyclist in a drunken-driving crash.Prosecutors said James Ryan was drunk when he slammed his motorcycle into 19-year-old Matthew Scarpati, who was fixing a flat tire on the Jones Beach bike trail in July 2009. Officials said Ryan was traveling more than 80 mph at the time of the crash. Following Ryan's sentencing today, Scarpati's loved ones said they were hoping for a longer prison term. "My feeling is someone like this should be locked up either for the rest of his life, or his life should be taken away from him," said Scarpati's brother, Chris. Ryan's attorney said his client deserves pity because he has the life sentence of brain damage suffered in the collision.Ryan's license has been suspended for the next six months. He will be able to get it back, but he will have to do it through the court system.
