YAPHANK - A new cargo rail terminal was unveiled in Yaphank today in an effort to ease traffic on Long Island by taking trucks off the roads.Officials at the privately funded Brookhaven Rail Terminal say it's going to bring a lot to Long Island, including local jobs. Freights carrying everything from baking supplies to building materials will now be running on the Ronkonkoma line on the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR), which is leasing the tracks. The LIRR says the freight traffic will not impact passenger travel at all. Not everyone is on board with the plan, including the Yaphank Taxpayers and Civic Association. In a statement, the group said, "The rail terminal will now place potentially hundreds of trucks per day on our already overcrowded roads, and once again decrease our quality of life with more noise pollution and traffic."Terminal officials, however, insist it won't have an effect on local neighborhoods. The Brookhaven Rail Terminal could eventually take as many as 40,000 trucks off of Long Island roads and bridges every year.
