CENTRAL ISLIP - New evidence was presented today in the housing discrimination suit against the Village of Garden City.
New York Communities for Change is suing Garden City, claiming it illegally changed zoning laws to prevent the building of an affordable housing project. Plaintiffs say the change was a move to keep minorities out. The village says it was motivated by community concerns about traffic and school overcrowding.
The judge today allowed the introduction of new evidence, a flier that a village official distributed during a trustee meeting in 2004.
The flier says, "Isn't it true that many families move to Garden City to assure their children quality education? What will bringing more students and over 300 families do?"
The plaintiffs argue that the flier was designed to pressure village officials into maintaining the status quo in the predominantly white neighborhood, a charge that the village denies.
The trial is expected to last three weeks.
