WESTBURY - A New Cassel man is accused of posing as a dentist and running a bogus practice out of his home. Police say 46-year-old Manuel Carranza's business cards identify him as a dental technician who does cleanings, gold fillings and root canals out of his Westbury apartment. But according to police, Carranza has no medical or dental training. Detectives say the highest level of education he completed was the sixth grade. Authorities say they found prescription medications and two stun guns in his home office. Carranza told police he used the guns as protection because he only dealt in cash and had gold jewelry in the apartment, which he would melt down to use in fillings. Carranza also showed police a fake New York State identification card. Carranza?s attorney says he does not have a criminal record, was never a dentist nor did he ever perform dentistry work. He is being held on $2,500 bond or cash.
