New budget poses challenge for Nassau County

MINEOLA - The 2012 budget approved by Nassau County lawmakers is expected to cause ripple effects across Long Island.

The budget vote turned into a heated special session last night, with Democrats strongly opposing it. Ultimately, Republicans had enough votes to pass it.

County Executive Ed Mangano (R-Nassau) is calling on labor leaders to come to the table and negotiate. He says if they don't agree to concessions, such as contributing to their health care costs, that hundreds of county workers could lose their jobs.

He also said that without savings from labor, two police precincts will close.

Labor leaders say that Mangano is asking for too many concessions.
