NORTH MERRICK - A new proposal being co-sponsored by Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) is seeking to address the risk of concussions among young athletes.

A state law that is in effect requires a student who has suffered a concussion to be sidelined for at least 24 hours and then get a doctor to clear them before they can resume playing. The federal legislation is the first that would try to prevent concussions by strengthening safety standards for football helmets.

If the bill is passed, the Consumer Product Safety Commission will determine what mandatory rules there should be for helmet standards.
