BELLPORT - Nearly 60 students were overcome by noxious fumes that swept their Bellport school this afternoon.

Officials say a teacher at the Frank P. Long Elementary School was also taken to the hospital after dozens fell ill due to an overwhelming odor from a landfill that sits behind the school.

Residents in the area say the smell has recently been getting more potent after the town signed a three-year contract with New York City to accept close to 10,000 tons of human waste at the landfill each month.

Officials say air quality checks conducted at the school have now come back negative. The Town of Brookhaven says it's suspending delivery of human waste at the landfill effective immediately.
