WOODBURY - A native Long Islander has been deemed a hero in February’s restaurant explosion in Kansas City, Mo.

The day of the natural gas explosion, former Long Islander Paul Mongiello was at the traffic light outside JJ’s Restaurant.

Officials say while other drivers rushed to safety, Mongiello repeatedly rushed back into the inferno, pulling out a waitress, bartender and chef. Mongiello now works in Kansas City.

News 12 Long Island will sit down with Mongiello later today.
