Sen. Charles Schumer is calling for change to protect families from so-called distracted burglaries.

Schumer wants National Grid to notify customers a day in advance of any in-house visits by an employee. In addition, Schumer wants the utility to provide an approximate time and name of its technician.

National Grid is also being asked to educate customers on how to identify employees.

The move comes after burglars dressed as National Grid workers and distracted homeowners and robbed them in Herricks, Westbury and Syosset.

A sketch has been released of a possible suspect.
