MASTIC BEACH - A Mastic Beach man is accused of hitting and shoving a child with developmental disabilities.

Nathaniel Grimes, 31, was charged with physically abusing a disabled person in the children's residential program at the Developmental Disabilities Institute in Smithtown.

Prosecutors say Grimes struck the victim with his hand, shoved the adolescent into a wall and onto the ground and then put pressure on the victim's neck. According to police, the incident took place in September 2015.

Prosecutors say he was the assistant manager of the program at the time of the incident.

Officials at the facility say Grimes has been suspended. He was arraigned Wednesday and released on his own recognizance.
