WOODBURY - Officials announced that a health monitor will watch over the Nassau County Jail a day after the state sued a contractor there over the recent deaths of inmates.

Twelve inmates have died at the jail since 2011. State investigators have blamed five of the deaths on inadequate medical care.

Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano's administration announced that it will hire a correctional health care monitor. Democrats in the county say that's not enough.

Legislator Siela Bynoe (D-Westbury) went so far as to demand the county find a new contractor to oversee the jail's medical needs.

As News 12 has previously reported, the current contractor, Armor Correctional, faces a lawsuit over the deaths and scathing criticism from the state attorney general.

Nassau's attorney says the county has been working with the attorney general's office to review Armor Correctional’s operations.
