WOODBURY - The cold weather is making it dangerous for anyone to be outside for long periods of time, and the homeless are among the most vulnerable.
Warming centers have been opened across Long Island through the weekend due to the frigid temperatures. Volunteers were out Friday trying to convince those in need to go to shelters and warming centers.
"Unfortunately we can't physically remove people to indoors," says Christopher Webster, of the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless. "We can only advise and insist and get them in touch with services in their area or as their needs are met."
In Nassau County, the warm bed program with emergency housing for the homeless has been activated. That hotline is 1-866-WARMBED.
In Suffolk County, there is also a program for the homeless. The Suffolk emergency number for anyone who needs to be brought to a warm shelter is 631-854-9100.
