EAST ROCKAWAY - Nassau police are trying to determine if two attacks on older women in the last two days are connected.

Police say an 83-year-old woman was putting packages into her car in the parking lot of the Best Market on Atlantic Avenue in East Rockaway when a man offered to put her cart away.

Detective Lt. Richard LeBrun says the man then jumped into her passenger seat and grabbed her right arm and shoulder. He says she was able to exit the vehicle and scream for help. The subject fled when bystanders approached the victim.

The incident happened Monday at 11:30 a.m. A day earlier, another older woman was attacked just miles away in Westbury outside a Wal-Mart. Police say an 85-year-old was pushed into the passenger side of her own car while a knife-wielding man drove her to an ATM in Elmont. He then withdrew money from her account using her PIN.

Both attacks occurred during the daytime. The suspect is described as a black man in his 20s or 30s, and between 5 foot 10 inches and 6 feet tall. A spokesman for Best Market told News 12 Long Island that they have surveillance video that they gave to police.

Police suggest shoppers park in an area that is away from other cars and visible to passersby. They are urging anyone with information about the suspect to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
