MASSAPEQUA PARK - Nassau County police are increasing their surveillance of social media posts in the wake of the terror attack in San Bernardino, California.

At the Nassau County Intelligence Center in Massapequa Park, detectives monitor social media using a platform called BrightPlanet.

Officers are able to monitor and vet keywords posted to social media and other Internet information with the software.

The center serves as a hub for information collected across the police department, according to Detective Sgt. Patrick Ryder, the county police intelligence wing's commanding officer.

Investigators determine which data warrants action daily, Ryder says.

But despite the department’s high-tech capabilities, police are asking for the public to remain vigilant of threats.

Nassau police are promoting an "if you see something, say something" social media campaign, urging county residents to report suspicious online behavior much like they would at major transit hubs.

Nassau police also say the department has also participated in anti-terror training exercises and has increased patrols around the county as a precaution.
