MINEOLA - Nassau County legislators today approved a $7.7 million settlement for the family of a New Cassel mother who was murdered several years ago. Back in 2009, 24-year-old Joanna Bird was stabbed to death by her ex-boyfriend, Leonardo Valdez-Cruz. The mother of two had an order of protection against her killer. After her death, Bird's family filed a lawsuit alleging that Nassau police didn't do enough to protect her. Last week, county lawmakers got a copy of a confidential internal affairs report on a number of officers who failed to follow procedure in the case. Lawmakers say the report shows that police officers ignored the order of protection and did not make mandatory arrests.Judge: Nassau lawmakers can see report in Joanna Bird caseJoanna Bird's family demands results of police probeJoanna Bird murder suspect speaks to News 12
