UNIONDALE - A Nassau County police officer is being hailed as a hero after he helped save three people from a house fire in Uniondale.

The fire broke out at around 6:40 p.m. Tuesday on the second floor of a house on Union Drive. Two girls and their father were inside the house, but they say they had no idea the house was on fire until a neighbor alerted them.

One of the girls, Ashley Souffrant, says after she was rescued, Officer Matthew Andoos went back into the house to rescue her father from the basement.

Souffrant says Andoos' actions were heroic and she is thankful for what he did.

Andoos says there was other good Samaritans on the scene helping at the house before he showed up and he does not see himself as a hero.

"I don't think I did anything that great except be in the right place at the right time," says Andoos.

Andoos was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation. A firefighter also suffered a broken ankle.

The fire is not considered suspicious and the cause is still under investigation. The family says they expect to be out of their home for at least seven months.
