WESTBURY - The Islamic Center of Long Island in Westbury finally cleared its biggest hurdle today after receiving approval from the village zoning board to expand.

The three-year ordeal has been hard-fought, with numerous residents objecting to the size and scope of the project.

A compromise was reached, reducing the size of the proposed three-story classroom building behind the mosque and eliminating a minaret to be constructed atop the mosque's dome.

The plans must still be approved by the village planning board, but Mayor Peter Cavallaro says that he doesn't foresee any problems.
