MINEOLA - Nassau lawmakers voted unanimously on a resolution urging the state to pass a bill that could put more than 100 speed cameras in school zones across Long Island.

The decision comes after the results of a traffic study were presented Thursday to the Nassau County Legislature. The study involved five separate school zones during one full school day, in an effort to see how many drivers were violating the posted speed limit.

Nassau Traffic Safety Board Director Chris Minstron says there were more than 200 violations per hour within each of the zones. He said that on average, speeds exceeded the posted school zone speed by 25 to 30 mph.

County officials have said Nassau is also counting on the revenue from those cameras to help finance NIFA’s lifting of the county's wage freeze.

State Assembly and Senate leaders told News 12 that they will consider the speed camera bill when they return from their recess.
