MINEOLA - Nassau legislators have voted 10-9 along party lines to approve County Executive Ed Mangano's 2014 budget proposal.
Mangano's proposed budget does not raise taxes, and does not include any new layoffs for country workers.
NIFA, the fiscal watchdog in charge of Nassau's finances, argues that Mangano's budget would put the county deeper in debt. NIFA is projecting a $100 million budget deficit for the county next year, and more down the line. The agency says that Nassau relies too heavily on borrowing.
The vote comes just a week before voters will choose their next county executive in the heated race between incumbent executive Mangano and the Democratic former executive, Tom Suozzi.
NIFA will still have to approve the budget before it is finalized.
