WOODBURY - Nassau County Legislator and Presiding Officer Peter Schmitt died today after having served the county for nearly two decades. He was 62. Officials say Schmitt passed away following a massive heart attack during a meeting in County Executive Ed Mangano's office this morning. He was rushed to Winthrop Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The fiery and passionate Republican lawmaker from Massapequa was first elected to the Legislature back in 1995. He consistently fought for lower taxes and smaller government. "Nassau has lost a dedicated public servant," Mangano said in a statement. "Nassau County is a better place because of Peter's leadership, commitment and compassion."
