VALLEY STREAM - A potential tax break for a car dealership in Valley Stream has residents worried that they may wind up paying the price.

Daniel Baker says Honda of Valley Stream wants to build a new service center on two vacant lots just down the road from its current facility on West Merrick Road.

Baker, who represents the realty company that is working with Honda, told the Nassau Industrial Development Agency Wednesday that the company is willing to start construction and add 12 new permanent jobs, only if it receives a three-year tax freeze on the property.

School officials and many residents say they are leery of any PILOT, or payment in lieu of taxes agreements.

It's been that way in Valley Stream ever since the Hempstead Town IDA approved a PILOT agreement at the Green Acres Mall that many residents blame for a massive tax hike on their residential bills.

Resident Ron Sabo fears if this latest PILOT is approved, it will happen again.

"We're gonna get the bill. I don't know much longer they expect people to stay here," he says.

Renters also say if taxes go up again, they fear that their rent will also increase.

The potential developer insists that the deal will expand the tax base in the long run because Honda will ultimately be paying taxes on a pair of lots that right now sit dormant.

Honda of Valley Stream says if it does not receive the PILOT, it will have no choice but to build its new facility just across the county line in Queens.

The Nassau IDA expects to render a decision on this application at its next board meeting. The meeting has not been scheduled yet, but will take place sometime within the next 30 days.
