MASSAPEQUA PARK - Nassau Girl Scouts honored Peter Schmitt today, a longtime troop supporter who had been a force in Long Island politics for nearly two decades before his sudden death last year.

Several troops planted a tree at Brady Park in Massapequa Park in Schmitt's honor. They surrounded the tree with flags and placed a permanent plaque at its base.

The Girl Scouts decided on Brady Park as the tree's location because before his death, Schmitt secured the funds to clean up the park and keep it preserved.

Schmitt, the former majority leader of the Nassau County Legislature, died of a heart attack while on the job last year.

Relatives of the late lawmaker say they're honored by today's special tribute. Schmitt's wife, Lois, says the community's support and appreciation of her husband's work has helped her and her family deal with their great loss.
