ISLAND PARK - The Nassau County Police Department is bringing back its special DWI team to set up checkpoints this holiday weekend to crack down on drunken driving.

The move follows an exclusive News 12-Newsday investigation that showed a dramatic drop in Nassau DWI arrests. News 12 first reported this week that Nassau DWI arrests dropped 42 percent beginning in 2011 when the county disbanded its Safety Enforcement Team, or SET team.

Nassau County officials announced Friday that the SET team will be returning under a new anti-DWI program called DART. Asset forfeiture funds will be used to pay for the extra resources.

Despite the decision to bring back the special patrols, Acting Police Commissioner Thomas Krumpter says he believes DWI arrests are down because drivers are simply being more compliant.

State police say they will also have additional patrols out for this holiday weekend.
