WOODBURY - With less than a week until the primary election, the candidates hoping for the Democratic nomination for Nassau County district attorney spent the weekend trying to shore up support.

Acting DA Madeline Singas embarked on what her campaign called a diner tour. She met with voters Saturday at about a dozen diners stretching from Great Neck to Woodbury.

Her opponent, Michael Scotto, spent the morning meeting with people in Long Beach. The former Manhattan prosecutor criticized Singas for her plan to charge heroin dealers whose customers die of an overdose with felony homicide.

Singas said it's part of her continued effort to battle Long Island's heroin problem, while Scotto said it's nothing more than a campaign stunt.

"Six days before the primary, she wants to change the laws to fight heroin," Scotto said. "There's been a heroin problem for the last five years; four of those years she was the chief assistant DA."

Singas fired back, "That's an outrageous claim. We've been working on heroin and substance abuse addiction and putting dealers in jail for many years. The only person who is politicizing this issue, unfortunately, is my opponent."

The primary vote takes place on Thursday. The winner of the Democratic nomination will face Republican Kate Murray, the current Hempstead town supervisor.
