HEMPSTEAD - More than 100 landlords, property managers and officials attended the Nassau County Bed Bug Task Force Forum at Hofstra University today to learn how to prevent and handle infestations.

The participants of the seminar were taught how to detect bed bugs by checking the cracks and crevices on mattresses, box springs and sofas.

The organizers of the forum shared tips on how to get rid of bed bugs, among them using a dryer to kill the blood-sucking insects with heat.

The forum also included a demonstration during which a bed bug-sniffing dog named Hunter had to find a vile filled with live bed bugs.

Hiring an exterminator could cost between $1,200-$5,000. Landlords are legally responsible for cleaning up a bed bug outbreak for their tenants.
