VALLEY STREAM - Nassau Comptroller George Maragos is trying to recoup retroactive raises the county paid out because of a clerical error.

Maragos says despite warning all county departments against issuing retroactive raises to employees, his office still received nearly $1 million worth of retroactive pay requests from various departments. The comptroller says he stopped most of them, but a handful slipped through the cracks.

Now he's trying to recoup more than $30,000 from five county election board workers who received retroactive pay.  All of them have close ties to county Republican leaders.

“It was simply a clerical error that allowed those five to go through,” says Maragos.

Maragos sent letters to all five workers requesting that they return the money to the county.  He says the state's constitution forbids retroactive pay unless it’s part of a collective bargaining agreement. The five workers in question are not union members.

Democratic appointees on the Board of Elections sought similar retroactive raises, but were denied. News 12 Long Island reached out to both the Republican and Democratic Board of Elections commissioners, as well as party leaders, but did not hear back from anyone.
