Nassau Co. cop recovering after East Meadow shooting

EAST MEADOW - A Nassau County police officer is recovering this evening after being shot in East Meadow yesterday. The unidentified officer was shot at around 5:20 a.m. in the parking lot of the East Meadow Plaza. He approached 41-year-old Dwayne Oxley, who police say was acting suspiciously in his SUV. When another officer arrived on the scene, Oxley locked himself inside his car. When they tried to get him out of the car, he grabbed at one of the officer's guns and shots rang out. Both officers were rushed to Nassau University Medical Center. The victim attempted physical therapy exercises today, and is in good spirits. Oxley was shot in the chest, and was pronounced dead at the scene. His criminal record shows multiple prison sentences for burglary convictions.
