MANHATTAN - The MTA is looking at a new counteroffer from the Long Island Rail Road unions.

The unions and the MTA met for about five hours yesterday in Manhattan.

With no deal still in place, the possible LIRR strike is nine days away.

However, it looks like there has been some progress after MTA Chairman Thomas Prendergast met with negotiators at the bargaining session.

The details of the counteroffer or when the two sides will meet again is not clear, but a spokesman says union reps will be available this weekend for more negotiations.
