BETHPAGE - The MTA has worked out a contingency plan for commuters if LIRR workers strike next month.

Newsday has obtained what it says is the LIRR strike contingency plan and the MTA says the plan only accommodates about one-third of commuters going to New York.

The plan would set up car pool lots at Citi Field and Aqueduct Race Track, as well as state parks in Valley Stream, Hempstead and Bethpage. More lots would also be set up at Farmingdale College, Belmont Lake State Park, Sunken Meadow State Park and Heckscher State Park.

Union leaders say the union is still far apart from the MTA on pay and other work issues. The LIRR union strike deadline is July 19.
