CENTRAL ISLIP - A reputed MS-13 gang member from Brentwood was sentenced today to life in prison for a wave of brutal crimes on Long Island.

Carlos Ortega, also known as "Silencio," was sentenced to life in prison plus 60 years for two murders that a judge described as "brutal, cold-blooded executions."

Back in February 2010, prosecutors say Ortega and other gang members lured 21-year-old Daniel Sandler to Timberland Drive, where Ortega shot and killed him execution-style because he thought Sandler was a member of a rival gang.

Prosecutors say Ortega's second victim, Mario Quijada, was a fellow MS-13 member. Officials say Ortega and other members wanted Quijada dead because they say he wouldn't "put in the work," meaning he refused to kill anyone on the gang's behalf. Prosecutors say the group lured Quijada to a beach in Far Rockaway, where Ortega tried to shoot him, but the gun jammed. So, prosecutors say the gang members hacked Quijada to death with knives and machetes.
