Mother says teen son's alleged killer was a friend

Police say they have arrested the man who shot and killed a Hempstead teen. Dante Quinones, 17, was gunned down last Wednesday night in Hempstead.

MINEOLA - Police say they have arrested the man who shot and killed a Hempstead teen.

Dante Quinones, 17, was gunned down last Wednesday night in Hempstead.

Police arrested 20-year-old Pedro Merchant, of North Valley Stream, yesterday.

Dante's mother says Merchant was a close friend of her son’s. She says she can't understand how an argument escalated to gunshots, but did admit her son was running with a bad crowd.

Merchant is expected to be arraigned on murder charges today.
