COPIAGUE - Gina Lieneck, a mother whose daughter died in a 2005 boating accident, threw her support behind proposed legislation that would mandate boating safety courses.

Under the proposed law, boaters would be required to take an eight-hour course on boating safety and pass an exam to earn a certificate.

The course costs $75.

Under the legislation, boaters without the certificate could be fined from $250 to $1,000.
