Motel raid in Riverhead attracts scrutiny

WADING RIVER - Tenants of a motel for low-income Long Islanders say a raid by Riverhead police over the weekend was excessive and left them feeling degraded.

Riverhead town officials executed a search warrant Friday at the Wading River Motel looking for code enforcement violations. However, witnesses say inspectors and police officers removed every guest from their rooms, recorded their identification, took pictures and searched their personal property.

The tenants, all homeless clients of Suffolk Social Services, felt their privacy rights were violated.

Riverhead Town officials say the search was conducted after numerous complaints and that several issues were uncovered, which they wouldn't disclose.

The motel's owners say they did not receive any tickets.
