WOODBURY - The Moreland Commission has recommended to eliminate the Long Island Power Authority following its response to Hurricane Sandy.

The committee was assigned to review the utility company’s response and issued the preliminary report today.

The report states that LIPA was unprepared for Sandy and inept in its response.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo created the commission after Sandy left millions of New Yorkers in the dark, including thousands on Long Island stranded without power for weeks.

Cuomo has said utilities like LIPA were severely unprepared for the storm.

LIPA responded to the report by saying, “We are reviewing the report and will continue to cooperate with the state and the Moreland Commission to do what is in the best interest of Long Island's ratepayers."

Cuomo, who appoints leaders of the LIPA board, would have to approve a measure to privatize the utility.
