ROCKVILLE CENTRE - Doctors, pharmacists and law enforcement officials gathered today at Molloy College for a forum aimed at combating the problem of over-prescribing addictive painkillers. As News 12 Long Island reported in the "Addicted on Long Island" series, police report a 30-percent rise in heroin arrests, and Nassau District Attorney Kathleen Rice believes prescription drugs have a lot to do with it. "What we've been able to discover is a precursor to kids and others dabbling with heroin is their first experience with prescription drugs," she says. Many pharmacies recognizing the prescription drug crisis are now participating in a statewide reporting program designed to cut down on doctor shopping and the forging of prescriptions.The participants of today's seminar worked on putting together a standardized procedure for handling heroin overdoses and better monitoring of painkiller prescriptions in Nassau County.
