GARDEN CITY - U.S. military recruiters visited a Garden City center for the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered community today to encourage youths to enlist. It marked the first time a recruiting event was held at a GLBT center in New York state. Members of the armed forces spoke with youths at The Center. For 17 years, the Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy banned openly gay people from serving in any branch of the U.S. military. The law was repealed last year in a move applauded by gay rights activists around the nation.
