MASSAPEQUA PARK - A Massapequa Park man is accused of swiping pocketbooks out of shopping carts at a North Bellmore Stop and Shop supermarket.

Officers say Michael Hammond put up a struggle when he was taken into custody. Police say when they were walking Hammond to the precinct, he broke away and ran down Merrick Road while in handcuffs.

Hammond was recaptured just a few moments later.

Police say the 24-year-old man carried out similar crimes at other grocery stores.

Hammond was also arrested for allegedly having 10 bags of heroin in his car. He's now facing grand larceny and drug charges.
