CALVERTON - A Wading River man accused of stabbing a driver during an alleged road rage incident is facing assault charges.

Police say Michael Doroski, 25, got into an argument over a traffic incident with another man on Sound Avenue near Fresh Pond Road Sunday afternoon over a traffic dispute. According to investigators, Doroski stabbed Brett Penny, 48, in the chest during the argument.

Doroski's mother says her son was simply defending himself.

“He was scared for his life. The man swung open his door, blocked him in, so he couldn't move...[He] attacked Michael while he was belted into his truck. Michael had no choice,” said Marie Doroski.

She said the incident was sparked by her son being too close to Penny’s vehicle. Police wouldn't comment on Doroski's version of events, only to say the investigation is continuing.

Penny, of Hampton Bays, was rushed to Stony Brook University Hospital. A hospital spokeswoman said Penny didn't want to speak with News 12.

Authorities are asking any witnesses to the incident to come forward.

Doroski was held on $10,000 bail after his arraignment Monday.
