MINEOLA - The New York Mets are in Kansas City after leaving Queens Sunday for the World Series, but Long Island fans are getting ready, too.

Before a 5 p.m. Mets pep rally kicked off at the Nassau County Legislative building in Mineola, there were signs of Mets fever around the Island.

The mounting excitement was visible from the "Let's Go Mets" marquee outside Farmingdale State College to local bakeries cooking up blue and orange treats.

Former Mets players and fans alike attended the Mineola rally.

Retired major leaguer Dwight "Doc" Gooden made an appearance to rev up the crowd. He predicted that the Mets will beat the Kansas City Royals in 6 games.

The last time the Mets won the World Series, in 1986, Gooden was a star pitcher on the team.

A Huntington resident says that the Mets have a reputation of being good to fans. Thomas Hickey, a 90-year-old World War II veteran, got a taste of the team's generosity Monday. He was asked to hold the American Flag as part of the team's on-field ceremonies during Friday's home game.

The Mets will take on the Royals in Game 1 of the series on Tuesday night. It will be the team's first World Series appearance in 15 years.
