MERRICK - A Merrick mother is urging state lawmakers to pass a bill that would provide bus transportation to students who live three miles or closer to their school.

Tara Notrica says because of her severe debilitative disease, it prevents her from walking or driving her child to school.

"I didn't have the means to get my children to school safely by myself and had to rely on others," Notrica says. "As you could imagine, the cost of private transportation was extreme."

The School Transportation Bill would allow pickups and drop-offs for students under certain extenuating circumstances.

Although the Merrick School District has agreed to assist Notrica, she wants to see a law passed to help others in the same situation.

The author of the bill is state Sen. Jack Martins (R - Mineola).

"There are people with extraordinary hardships and we shouldn't ignore that simply with the 'one-size-fits-all' approach to provide busing," Sen. Martins told News 12.

The Notrica family is hoping the bill will be voted on by the end of the legislative session next week.

Merrick School District and the Nassau/Suffolk School Boards Association have not yet responded for comment on this story.
