Merrick man accepts plea deal in boy's stabbing

MINEOLA - A Merrick man pleaded guilty today to attempted murder and assault for stabbing a boy at a Dave and Buster's restaurant arcade in Westbury.

As News 12 Long Island has reported, last October, an 8-year old boy was playing a video game at the arcade when he was stabbed in the back at least five times by 23-year-old Evan Sachs.

Today, Sachs' mother, Randi Sachs, said her mentally ill son attacked the child because he wanted to die, adding that he is not a monster, but rather the other victim of this case.

"The anti-depressant made him manic, made him delusional, and he thought he was going to have suicide by cop," Randi Sachs said.

Following Sachs' plea, a judge agreed to sentence him to 14 years. If he had gone to trial and been found guilty, Sachs could have faced 25 years behind bars.

In court today, Sachs apologized to the victim and his family, saying he "would give anything to undo" what he did.

Sachs is expected to be sentenced Sept. 8. His attorney requested that he be placed in psychiatric care.
