RONKONKOMA - A memorial honoring a Long Island war hero was unveiled Sunday at MacArthur Airport.

Dozens of friends, family members and dignitaries gathered for the emotional ceremony.

On June 28, 2005, Lt. Michael Murphy, a Navy SEAL, and most of his team were killed in a firefight in Afghanistan. One side of the monument details the events of that day.

Murphy was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his actions.

Murphy's father, Dan Murphy, says the monument will serve as a reminder of the sacrifices made by the heroes who have defended the nation's freedom.

Inscribed on the monument are also the names of the men and women from Suffolk and Nassau counties who made the ultimate sacrifice in the war on terror.

Petty Officer 1st Class Marcus Luttrell was the sole survivor of the encounter. He wrote a book on the subject,  which was adapted for the silver screen in 2013's "Lone Survivor," starring Mark Wahlberg as Luttrell.

The actor who portrayed Murphy, a Patchogue native, in the film was Taylor Kitsch.
