Meeting held to save Suffolk health clinics

BRENTWOOD - Suffolk officials came together today in an effort to keep the county's health clinics open and running despite massive funding cuts.

Clinics such as the Brentwood Family Health Center are struggling after the state decided to slash $20 million in health funding last year. Hospitals across Long Island, which run the centers, say they want to reduce services and lay off 200 workers to make up the difference.

Hospital supervisors in Hauppauge complained to county officials during the meeting about the detrimental long-term effects they say cuts will have on the entire system. However, lawmakers placed the blame on the state and no one seemed to have a solution to the problem.

Some have suggested that the county use reserves to offset the state's reductions, but County Executive Steve Levy (R-Suffolk) says that wouldn't resolve the problem.
