ME to determine if remains are Shannan Gilbert's

OAK BEACH - While the Suffolk County medical examiner works to determine the identity of remains found yesterday along Ocean Parkway, police returned to the spot where the bones were found. Suffolk County Police Commissioner Richard Dormer says police believe they found the skeletal remains of missing New Jersey woman Shannan Gilbert. The remains were found a quarter of a mile away from where the prostitute?s purse, cell phone, jeans and shoes were found last week.Today, police conducted a final assessment of the swampy thicket where the remains were found and News 12 Long Island's cameras followed investigators into the tall, dense reeds.Investigators say they believe Gilbert ran into the thicket after fleeing a client?s home, got mired in the mud and accidentally drowned. The medical examiner will try to determine if the bones are Gilbert's and how she died. Gilbert's mother says she is not ready to believe the remains are her daughter's.
